The frst submarine telegraph cable was laid across
New York harbor in 1842 by Samuel F.B. Morse. Te
copper wire was insulated with hemp, soaked in tar and
pitch and covered with a layer of India rubber. Tis was
the frst practical demonstration of telegraphy. It was
followed two years later by the frst land line telegraph
cable from Baltimore to Washington, over which Morse
sent his epochal meassage.
